The pits were used for the ritual sacrifice of animals to the gods of the underworld. Before detailed excavations and analysis of the remains of material from the bottom of the pits, their purpose remained uncertain. As one of the assumptions, it was suggested that the large pits served as a prison. This assumption turned out to be incorrect, but some popular sources still indicate the existence of "underground prisons" in Uplistsikhe.
